1899
William B. Neyenesch brought his young family from Maywood, Illinois, to start work as the lead printer for the Hotel Del Coronado, 10 years after the hotel’s opening. Mr. Neyenesch was already an accomplished newspaper man and printer when he came west with his wife Mary and their two young sons, William and John.
1908
William Neyenesch and his partner H.C. Reed moved out of the Hotel Del Coronado and opened their own print shop on F Street in San Diego between 2nd & 3rd Avenues. They later moved to a bigger facility on F Street between 9th & 10th Avenues, and then again to an even larger building at 2020 California Street.
1914
The operations moved again to 2567 K Street after purchasing the print equipment from the Hotel Del. This shop was located in a house on the back side of their family property. The Neyenesch children—John, Robert, James, Mary, Margaret, and Fred—began to get involved in printing.

1924
Robert Neyenesch convinced his father to buy a linotype machine and then helped his sister Mary enroll in a linotype operator’s class at San Diego High School. Mary was the first female in this class. Mary’s education and Robert’s business development activities among local business owners made the modern machine a profitable addition to the growing range of Neyenesch Printers’ printing options.
Mid-1900s
Growth and Expansion
1941
Operations expanded with the construction of a state-of-the-art building at 18th Street & Broadway.

1944–1946
William B. Neyenesch passed away in 1944 following a short illness. His wife, Mary, passed away shortly after in 1946. The second generation of the Neyenesch family was already training the third generation, and business prospects were brightened by San Diego’s exploding population of businesses and new residents.
1958
A new printing plant was built at 2750 Kettner Boulevard, where the company remains to this day. The move was necessitated by CalTrans beginning construction of the 5 freeway. Neyenesch Printers was nationally recognized for design excellence and special-order capability.
1961
A $60,000 lithograph press was installed. This press was the largest of its type, capable of printing one color, 6,500 sheets per hour, and 37.5 x 50 sheets.
1964
A new concept of direct-plate printing, the “Platemaster,” was introduced, eliminating the need for negatives.
1971
Neyenesch Printers printed “one of the largest sheetfed jobs ever run in the West”: 3 million sheets for Standard Oil Co., printed on a Mehle 49 2-color press.
