Choosing the right professional binding matters. Not all binding conveys the same message in marketing materials. Your binding not only needs to look good but it also needs to be functional. We will look at the binding options and give you tips on how to choose the right one for your project.
Binding is done through stitching, gluing, stapling, wire or plastic. There are pros and cons to each type of binding.
Binding options:
- Spiral – This binding uses coil through holes on the document’s edge. This is a simple form of binding. Usually this is used for workbooks, journals, guidebooks and manuals. It is very functional but not aesthetically pleasing. This is the best binding for materials that need to lay flat.
- Perfect – This binding is common in books at catalogs. It has a clean finished look. The cover is glued to the inside pages and has a spine. The more pages you have the better for this type of binding. This is the most durable binding for long term use.
- Saddle – This is a very common and cost-effective type of binding. Commonly used for brochures, booklets, newsletters and magazines. Sheets are folded together and stapled on the fold. This is the most often used binding for lightweight marketing materials.
- Comb – Similar to spiral, this type of binding uses rectangular holes and plastic rings to hold the pages together. This is often used for notebooks, workbooks and other items where the look is not an issue. This is suited well for items that need to lay flat when open.
When choosing a binding, there are several things to consider such as durability, materials and overall look. Cost is always a factor, but you should balance cost with durability requirements. There is no point in saving money on binding if the result is it falls apart.
Another thing to note is that thicker paper requires stronger binding such as perfect or comb. Thinner stocks work better with saddle or spiral.
