The more things change…

Having a background in both printing and mailing, it seems obvious that if a piece is printing digitally and mailing, that Variable Data Printing is the only way to go. Even the most basic use of variable data can make a big difference, yet so few people are using it to even a fraction of it’s potential.

For starters, using VDP can be more efficient. Pieces that are mailing are already addressed and printed in postal order, so you don’t have to do an inkjet process later. However, there is so much more than just addressing that can be done.

Adding the recipient’s name to the piece makes it feel more personal. And since the recipient’s name is already in the database, it’s a simple matter of adding or modifying a salutation.

Designing to your data can be very effective. Before you even draw one pixel, review your mailing list and see if there is anything in there that could be used to drive design elements. Variable text isn’t the only thing you can change. Graphics, copy, even color schemes and type styles can be changed based on information in your database.

Need more information? Add personalized websites (PURLS) to a piece to gather information for future use. You can even use variable QR Codes for people on the go.

Most of all, despite the fact that this technology has been available for years, very few people are using it to it’s full potential, which means your pieces will seem even more dynamic in a very static mix.
